Planning Your Future: Tips From a UNIV Instructor
Written by UNIV Instructor Zeyna Aouad
Feb 16, 2024Figuring out what you want to do with your life can be scary, exciting, challenging, and fun all at once. How do you know what you’re good at? How do you know what you’re passionate about? How do you know what major or career will give you the most financial stability? Or the most happiness? These are some of the questions we attempt to answer in UNIV 1112 Majors and Career Exploration.
In addition to being a UNIV instructor, I am also the program coordinator at the Learning Resources Center (LRC), where we provide support to CU students in the form of tutoring, supplemental learning, workshops, coaching, and more. In both of my roles, I’ve seen many students struggle with planning their futures.
Sometimes, students realize they are passionate about a different major and decide to change routes. Other times, students have the passion for a particular major but are struggling in their classes and need additional support. Whatever your own journey is, you are not alone. The good news is that you don’t have to have it all figured out, but the right resources can help you make informed choices throughout your college career and beyond.
What I love the most about teaching UNIV students is that I get to serve as a resource during the transition from high school to college, which can be a challenging time. In my role, I’ve had the opportunity to share my own journey of self-exploration. I originally went to university the traditional route, completing a Bachelor of Arts in political science. I worked in communications and marketing for five years before deciding I wanted to go back to school to pursue my true passion for science. Last year, I graduated from CU Denver with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in biochemistry. My college experience was more meaningful to me the second time around because I was more engaged with the material I was learning.
The biggest piece of advice I give is to allow yourself to explore different interests and don’t put too much pressure on yourself to decide your whole life in the first year of university. Many courses are required for all students, regardless of major. This structure affords students the flexibility to explore different interests while still completing necessary credits.
While you’re in your first couple semesters of courses, pay attention to which subjects you gravitate towards. If you feel passionate about something, don’t let challenges stand in your way because there are many resources at CU that will help you succeed, including UNIV and the LRC. If a course is challenging, ask yourself if it is important to the goal or path you want to pursue. Reminding yourself of your goals will help you stay motivated during the tough times.
Decisions are difficult, but always remember that you’re allowed to change your mind and the community at CU Denver will be here for you along the way.
