Welcome to the Study Jungle—The LRC: CU Denver’s Academic Oasis
The LRC explains how using plants can create an optimized study space.
Oct 25, 2024Step into CU Denver’s Learning Resources Center (LRC) and you’ll immediately feel the calming embrace of nature. The abundance of greenery, from the trailing ivy at the front desk to the lush spider plants on the Learning Hub tables, defines the center's soothing, focused atmosphere. Much like a well-nurtured plant, students at the LRC are given the environment and support to grow academically.
Surrounded by greenery, students can find calm in the often-hectic college environment. The LRC has intentionally incorporated plants not just for aesthetics, but because research shows that plants play an active role in reducing stress and anxiety and boosting focus. Providing a small tropical haven contributes to the success of the LRC’s overall mission—helping students thrive in a peaceful and productive space. The presence of snake plants, succulents, and pothos offers a fresh atmosphere, where fresh air and the soothing effects of nature create a perfect study oasis.
Whether you’re collaborating with a tutor or working independently in one of the new reserved rooms, the LRC’s greenery fosters an environment that encourages concentration, problem-solving, and growth. The space, designed for focused learning, supports your academic needs by providing individualized attention from tutors while surrounding you with the natural elements known to improve productivity.
Beyond the plants and calming ambiance, the LRC offers a range of services to guide you through your academic journey. With one-on-one coaching, group tutoring, study skills workshops, and supplemental learning sessions, our professionals and peer tutors are ready to help you navigate complex subjects, improve your study skills, and prepare for exams. Just like a plant, success takes time and care—and the LRC provides just that.
To enhance the studying experience, the LRC has introduced a room reservation system, perfect for students who need a private or group study space. The reserved rooms, equipped with glass whiteboards and some with tech displays, give students additional tools they need to collaborate or focus individually.
It's important to remember that the LRC is not a drop-in study space, and we’ve structured our services and Learning Hub to ensure that students seeking academic assistance receive the full attention and support they need in a calm and focused environment. Be sure to book your space ahead of time. The process is simple: just let us know at the front desk when you’d like to reserve a room, and we’ll make sure you have a quiet, comfortable space for your study session. Students can select 30, 60, or 90 minute study sessions in any of our designated meeting rooms on a first come, first served basis.
At the LRC, you’re not just surrounded by tablets and tutors—you’re in an environment that’s been curated to enhance your learning and well-being. The plants you see in the space play a major role in creating this unique atmosphere, where students can relax, concentrate, and succeed. Whether you’re visiting for tutoring or reserving a study room, the LRC’s calming ambiance is designed to support both your academic and personal growth.
Inspired by the LRC’s plants? Adding greenery to your own study area can bring similar benefits. Here are a few tips to get started with plant care:
- Pick resilient plants: Snake plants, pothos, and spider plants are great starters that thrive with minimal care.
- Get the light right: Most indoor plants prefer bright, indirect light. Monitor their leaves to adjust accordingly.
- Water carefully: Only water when the soil feels dry about two inches down to avoid overwatering.
- Start small: Begin with one or two plants and expand as you gain confidence.
- Repot as needed: When roots outgrow their pots, repotting into a larger container with fresh soil is key.
