Discovering Denver
Learning Hub Ambassadors share their favorite things to do downtown.
Nov 18, 2024Living and studying in the heart of downtown Denver is an experience unlike any other—one almost exclusive to our campus! From the moment you step foot off Auraria, you're immersed in a city filled with energy, culture, and unique experiences. Whether you're looking to unwind after class, explore with friends on the weekend, or find budget-friendly eats, downtown Denver has something for everyone.
Let the Learning Hub Ambassadors (LHAs) take you on a tour of some of their favorite spots that don't require a huge budget... featuring adventures within reach where you can meet your moment!
Strolling the Historic Streets of LoDo
Lower Downtown, or LoDo, is Denver's oldest neighborhood and a vibrant blend of historic charm and modern energy. You'll find buildings dating back to the late 1800s that have been transformed into some of Denver's best restaurants, shops, and galleries. Start with a walk down Wynkoop Street, where you'll find the landmark Union Station. This 100-year-old train station isn't just a transit hub; it's a revitalized community gathering spot with cafes, shops, and the cozy Great Hall dubbed "Denver's Living Room." You're sure to find something in this historic epicenter.
A Walk Through Confluence Park
Just a 15-minute walk from campus, Confluence Park is where the Cherry Creek and South Platte River meet. This park is a breath of fresh air in the middle of the city, offering trails, grassy areas to relax, and a riverfront promenade. On sunny days, students and locals alike love dipping their feet in the shallow river, watching kayakers navigate the rapids, or simply lounging in the sun. Confluence Park also connects to the Cherry Creek Trail, a perfect biking route for when you feel like exploring the city on wheels. And if you're into paddleboarding, rentals are available nearby!
Exploring the Denver Art Scene on First Fridays
Art lovers will be thrilled to discover the Santa Fe Art District, about a 10-minute drive or quick bus ride from campus. Every first Friday of the month, the district hosts a free art walk where galleries open their doors to the public. You'll see art from local painters, sculptors, and photographers, and food trucks line the streets with affordable, delicious options. It's a vibrant scene and a perfect way to kick off the weekend with friends. The best part? It's free to attend and packed with energy, creativity, and incredible art to discover.
Budget-Friendly Bites and Unique Eats
Denver has no shortage of delicious food, but it can be pricey. When you're not in the mood to spend your college tuition at restaurants like Edge, Guard & Grace, and Tavernetta, LHAs share some much more affordable gems near campus:
- Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs – Just a 10-minute walk from campus, Biker Jim's is a classic spot for adventurous eaters. Known for its wild game hot dogs (think elk, buffalo, and reindeer), Biker Jim's offers student-friendly prices and generous portions. Don't miss the cream cheese topping—a surprisingly amazing combination.
- Illegal Pete's – A few blocks away on 16th Street, this burrito joint is a staple for students. It's affordable, fresh, and the portions are massive. Plus, they offer a student discount!
- Sam's #3 – If you're craving something different, head over to Sam's #3 on Curtis Street. It really doesn't matter what you're in the mood for... chances are, you’ll find it here. With one of the most extensive menus in Denver, this famous diner serves up some of the tastiest plates for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
Catch a Game or Concert
If you're a sports fan, CU Denver's location is unbeatable. You're just a stone's throw from Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, and Ball Arena, where the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche play. Rockies games are especially student-friendly; they often have Rockpile seats for around $10, making it easy to catch a game without breaking the bank. Ball Arena also hosts concerts, and while big headliners can be expensive (we're not naming names), it's worth keeping an eye on student discounts or last-minute tickets for more affordable options.
Diving into the Museum Scene
For a more cultural experience, Denver has a rich museum scene, and many offer free or discounted admission for students:
- The Denver Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) – A short walk from campus, the MCA is a modern, quirky museum that hosts rotating exhibits from artists worldwide. On the first Saturday of each month, they offer free admission.
- The Denver Art Museum – With an impressive collection and unique architecture, the DAM is worth a visit. They offer free admission on select days, so keep an eye on their calendar for when you can get in at no cost.
- The History Colorado Center – This museum offers interactive exhibits that bring Colorado's history to life. It's affordable and a fantastic way to learn about the state's past and cultural heritage.
Shopping at the Denver Central Market
In the mood for some culinary exploration? Head over to RiNo (River North Art District), about a 15-minute walk or a short drive from campus. The Denver Central Market is a food hall that brings together vendors selling everything from fresh-baked pastries to wood-fired pizza. It's a great place to explore new foods or grab a coffee and study. RiNo is also home to some of Denver's best street art, with murals around almost every corner, perfect for snapping a few photos with friends.
Caffeine Fixes and Study Spots
For those late-night study sessions, Denver has no shortage of unique coffee shops that double as ideal study spots. Here are a couple of student favorites:
- Thump Coffee – Located on 1201 E 13th Ave, Thump has a relaxed vibe and plenty of seating. The coffee is top-notch, and the spacious tables make it easy to spread out and get work done.
- Dazbog Coffee – Just a short walk from campus, Dazbog is a local chain known for strong coffee and a Russian-inspired menu. It's affordable, and the cozy atmosphere is perfect for both studying and people-watching.
- Little Owl Coffee – Tucked into a corner of LoDo, Little Owl is a tiny spot with amazing coffee. Though seating is limited, it's perfect for grabbing a cup to go before a walk through the city.
One of the best parts of attending CU Denver is the endless list of things to do and places to explore just a short walk, bus ride, or drive from campus. The city's mix of art, food, history, and outdoor spaces means that you don't have to travel far to find a new adventure and make plenty of new memories. So, grab some friends, step outside the classroom, and experience all that downtown Denver has to offer.
