How to be a PAL for New CU Denver Students
Support first-year students by becoming a Peer Advocate Leader!
Jan 17, 2025Do you remember your first semester at CU Denver? What was it like? Think about your first-ever class—what did it feel like to sit in a lecture hall? Did you know anyone in the class? Were you nervous, excited, or a combination of the two?
Here at CU Denver, our Peer Advocate Leader (PAL) program provides mentorship and support to our first-year students in their first semester at CU Denver as part of our First-Year Experience (FYE) program. Our PALs provide support for students in a variety of ways, including:
- Providing in-classroom support in 1-2 FYE courses for the entire fall semester
- Creating and hosting out-of-class events and workshops to help foster connection and belonging for first-year students
- Assisting students in one-on-one meetings to answer questions about the university, get connected to resources, and to get advice on college success skills
Our PALs also get the opportunity to grow their leadership skills by completing certification trainings through the College Reading and Learning (CRLA) peer tutoring certification program. In addition, PALs can apply to be a Peer Ongoing Development (POD) Leader after their first semester of work, which can lead to increased leadership responsibilities and pay for them at CU Denver. At the end of their experience, PALs have graduated and gone on to do amazing things, such as attending law school, going on to graduate school, securing a role in their desired industry, and more!
Being a PAL has many benefits for you as a student, including:
- Having a paid position on-campus that pays Denver minimum wage and works around your schedule
- Having opportunities to get resume-building certifications and experiences
- Getting connected to other professional staff and offices across campus for additional paid opportunities, including: The Pre-Collegiate Program, New Student Orientation, TRIO and McNair Scholars, and so many more
- Making a difference by supporting new first-year CU Denver students by helping them feel successful their first semester
If you are interested in the PAL position, the application will open December 2nd, 2024 and close February 14th, 2024. More information can be found at this link: qrco.de/PALApp. We encourage you to apply early! If you have any questions, you can email us at liz.berry@ucdenver.edu.
We hope to see your application, and we cannot wait to welcome our new students in Fall 2025!
