Invite a J-1 Student Intern

(undergraduate student enrolled abroad)

J-1 Scholar Exchange Visitor Program Overview

Use these instructions for

  • An undergraduate student enrolled in an academic program abroad who will come to U.S. from abroad; or
  • A undergraduate student enrolled abroad who is already in the U.S. as a J-1 student intern and will transfer their J-1 sponsorship from another J-1 program sponsor to the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus.

The J-1 student intern category allows students to come to the U.S. for internships. The category has stringent requirements and we use it for undergraduate students enrolled in academic programs abroad. Graduate students can use other J categories with fewer requirements.

The undergraduate student must

  1. Be currently “enrolled in and pursuing a degree at and accredited postsecondary institution outside of the US”
  2. Be in good standing at home institution
  3. Fulfill education objectives from the home institution through the internship
  4. Return to home institution to complete the degree
  5. Be in the US primarily to engage in the internship rather than to work to earn money
  6. Be officially accepted into the internship program
  7. Be engaged in full-time employment and/or training at least 32 hours a week
  8. Show proof of English language proficiency per the English Language Proficiency Policy
  9. Have sufficient funding to support self and any dependents
  10. Obtain medical insurance that meets the minimum requirements set by the U.S. State Department

The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus host faculty must:

  1. Complete relevant sections of Form DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan
  2. Read and sign the Initial J-1 Student Intern Faculty Sponsor Agreement and the J-1 Student Intern Letter of Invitation if not an employee or Letter of Offer for an employee
  3. Ensure that the internship position is at least 32 hours a week
  4. Ensure that the intern is not engaged in clinical positions that would have “patient care or contact, including any work that would require student interns to provide therapy, medication or other clinical or medical care”
  5. Ensure that the intern is not engaged in unskilled or casual labor; child or adult care or aviation
  6. Ensure that the intern does not displace an American worker
  7. Ensure that the position exists solely to help intern fulfill the objectives of his/her participation and does not include more than 20% clerical work
  8. Expose the intern to “American techniques, methodologies and technology”
  9. Complete the J-1 Student Intern Evaluation at least one and up to 3 times throughout the internship depending on length

  • Maximum appointment of 9 months (Denver) or one year (Anschutz)and where conversion to a regular appointment is not expected.
  • When visiting positions are posted, appointments are limited to 2 academic years (Denver) and 2 years (Anschutz).

Steps to request Form DS-2019 for a J-1 Student Intern

You must have access to MyISSS to submit a J-1 request. If you do not have access, follow the instructions. After collecting the information, you will submit the J-1 Request for Form DS-2019 in MyISSS at least 2-3 months in advance of the proposed start date.

Step One

  • Collect information about appointment or invitation
  • Obtain signatures on Letter of Offer or Letter of Invitation and Initial J-1 Faculty Sponsor Agreement for Student Intern
  • Complete DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan
  • Collect proof of English Language Proficiency

Step Two

  • Complete Export Control and add POI to HCM

  • Complete J-1 Request for Form DS-2019 at least 2-3 months in advance of the proposed start date.

  • Prospective student intern completes their part of the J-1 Request for Form DS-2019

Step Five

  • ISSS issues Form DS-2019 and emails it to the prospective student intern and copies the HRBP

Step Six

  • Student Intern applies for a visa (transfer in intern and Canadian and Bermudan citizens exempt
  • Student intern makes travel arrangements and arrives at the university
    • Obtain signatures on required documents

J-1 extensions are possible to the maximum time limit of 1 year or any increment up to 1 year.

Steps to request extension of Form DS-2019 for a J-1 Student Intern

  • Update Form DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan

  • Complete J-1 Student Intern Extension Request at least 1 month in advance of the DS-2019 end date.

  • Student intern completes their part of the extension request including Certification of Academic Status for a J-1 Student Intern

  • Within 10 days of receiving a complete request, ISSS issues Form DS-2019, emails it to the student intern and copies the HRBP
