Reimagining the Core Curriculum

UPDATE: April 29, 2026

Provost Karen Marrongelle and Faculty Assembly Chair Wendy Bolyard notified faculty and staff this morning that earlier this month, CU Denver's faculty voted to pass this proposed structural update to CU Denver's core curriculum. More than 80% of eligible faculty who voted cast "yes" votes on the proposal, which has been based on a yearslong community-wide process detailed further throughout this page.

A supplemental faculty vote, on whether an existing requirement for a one-credit lab should be made optional, did not pass. You can read the April 29 announcement in full here.

From here, the proposal moves to the Core Curriculum Oversight Committee (CCOC), which will work with stakeholders in the next year to lead the implementation of the proposal. Progress will be reported during the 2026-27 academic year on the CCOC webpage and/or through other university channels, though not on this page moving forward.

Background on this Effort

In fall 2023, the Office of the Provost announced an Academic Transformation initiative to review and reconsider aspects of CU Denver’s academic operations to respond to changes in technology, education, and society. The core curriculum (see current requirements) was one of four major topics explored by working groups that met in 2023-24.

Based on broad review of emerging best practices and our own state of play, a faculty-led Reimagining the Core Curriculum working group produced a December 2024 report recommending an updated core curriculum. Following stakeholder dialogues throughout 2025, a proposal for an updated core curriculum structure has been developed with the goal of better serving CU Denver student needs going forward.

In the spring 2026 semester, that proposal has been introduced across CU Denver in advance of a faculty vote on the proposal in April. With that vote now approved, the Core Curriculum Oversight Committee (CCOC) assumes implementation activities, including those related to approved courses and thematic clusters. This work will progress in 2026-27, and the updated core curriculum would undergo a phased implementation with students starting in fall 2027.
