Planning Accessible Events

CU Denver is committed to accessible and inclusive experiences for all campus and community members, including at CU Denver hosted or sponsored events. Events are defined as a class session, field trip, ceremony, activity, workshop, program, training, etc. Please consider the following best practices when planning or hosting an event:

Include an accessibility statement on all advertisements. For an example of an accessibility statement, please see the "Accessibility Statement for Event Planners" dropdown below.

Provide individuals a clear process for requesting accommodations and respond to accommodation requests in a timely manner.

Consider accessibility early in your planning and implement as many inclusive practices as possible. This may include but is not limited to:

  • providing accurate captioning
  • ensuring access to elevators and ramps where stairs are necessary
  • providing accessible paths of travel
  • remediating documents to accessible versions, etc.

By integrating these accessible practices from the start of your event planning, you may reduce the need for retrofitting or individual accommodation. This could save time and money.

Ensure that the staff assigned to support events are equipped with the knowledge/resources of how to properly adjust to the needs of their guests with disabilities.

Inform individuals who request accommodations of any event changes early and ahead of the event.

Commit to creating a positive, equitable, and inclusive experience for all. Individuals with disabilities should have a similar, if not identical experience as their non-disabled peers.
