Sitefinity releases - December 19, 2018
CMS Transition Team | Office of Information Technology and University Communications Dec 21, 2018New features
News article media left template
We have added an additional option for displaying news articles. This list template allows for an image to the left of the article headline. This is useful for any page that needs a list of news articles.
Image optimization recommendations
Optimized web images are crucial to the performance and usability of your website. It is an area many site builders struggle to master. We have added content around optimizing images for file size and quality, and recommended image dimensions for Sitefinity widgets.
Google Analytics for cuanschutz.edu websites
www.cuanschutz.edu and its subdomains will receive their own analytics property and Google Tag Manager event tracking. Site builders responsible for building pages on this domain will need to add “GTM-PBKNXZ9” to their page properties on their top-level pages, using the “Google Tag Manager container id” field. This can be accessed through the “Title & Properties” on any page. If the value is left blank, analytics will be tracked by the default CU Denver container.
Improvements
Performance improvements
In November, we completed a performance audit on our Sitefinity application, and the supporting servers and infrastructure. Improvements will be ongoing for the next few months. Performance is expected to steadily improve as we implement more improvements.
Caching
Additional caching was implemented site-wide through a variety of settings.
Pre-Compiler
The pre-compiler is a tool now being used; it goes through various backend assets and compiles them so that visitors are delivered a faster page. This avoids having our content builders having to inadvertently wait for backend pages to load while they compile themselves.
The People/Person content type
After building the people content type and adopting the Sitefinity multisite environment, we discovered that images and CV documents need to be stored in a different way. After code depoloyment on December 19th, we will run a process that corrects this issue. All image and documents will need to be stored in the centralized images and documents library – appropriate folders will be available in those libraries.
Search
Search boosting was adjusted in the Searchblox collections by increasing the weight of the critical path content as well as school and college content being searched in SharePoint and Sitefinity and reducing the weight of external content sources like the CU System, and libraries.
Accessibility updates
CU logo in global header
- Added keyboard focus
Accordions
- Added aria and JavaScript to toggle aria states. Widgets updated: FAQ accordions, people accordion view, people detailed view accordions.
Ambiguous linked text
- Ambiguous linked text (e.g. read more, learn more, full story, download, etc), offer little value to those using screen readers. To resolve this, we added “aria-labelled by” and ID's to these type of links so that screen readers will read the ambiguous text + the title of the widget item. Widgets updated: blog post list view, news list view, documents list & table.
Documents list
- Updated text color of document type and size to meet color contrast standards.
Quick Links
- Added focus, aria, and JavaScript to toggle aria states.
OIT software list
- Changed "Read more" to a button element and added aria, JavaScript to toggle aria states, and aria-labelled by so that screen readers will read "Read more (followed by software title)" and "Read less (followed by software title)".
RFI Form
- Color contrast updated to meet accessibility standards.
Fixed
Inline Editing
Users found that they could not publish a page using the inline editing feature. This has been resolved.
Research and creative projects widget
The research and creative projects had the wrong icon in the page editing toolbox bar, this has been corrected.
Multiple FAQ accordion widgets on a page
When a builder added more than one FAQ accordion widget to a page, the accordions would fail to open. This has been resolved.
Multiple Tabs widgets on a page
When a builder added more than one Tabs widget to a page, tabs would fail to work properly. This has been resolved.

Groundwork for future improvements
Site crawler script
The out of box Sitefinity crawler has proved ineffective for our needs, we are there for replacing it with a script that will run on the server. The script will routinely crawl all of our Sitefinity sites, this forces them to compile and will improve performance for visitors.
Academic program data collection and clean up completed
We have received about 430 submissions to use for our degree data. This data will be used for the development of the “Academic Degree Program” content on the web. Thank you to everyone who sent us data! We anticipate the new academic program content type to be released January 30.
New | Ed degree finder funded and underway
The New | Ed degree finder tool has been funded! The data we collected in November will be used to populate these widgets and allow them to work on our licensed websites.
Horizontal navigation fly out behavior
The “Horizontal” navigation template is being rewritten to improve its functionality on mobile and desktop devices and with accessibility in mind.

Library not selected when adding an image, document or video to a content block
The library must be manually selected when adding an image, document or video to a content block. We are pursuing this issue with progress. Be sure to check out this workaround: https://www.ucdenver.edu/atweb/support/current-workarounds/images-bug
CTA, Testimonial, and Enhanced Card changing title of the page
If a single item of content is specifically selected, it will change the title of the page. There is a work around to avoid this issue, please see: https://www.ucdenver.edu/atweb/support/current-workarounds/reusable-content-type-bug
