Inclusive Innovation in Action
A Visit to the CIDE Human Factors Testing Lab
Elizabeth Coughanour Sep 15, 2024At the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering (CIDE) Human Factors Testing Lab, innovative technology is being developed to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Located within the Anschutz Medical Campus, this facility plays a key role in advancing assistive, mainstream and medical technologies that address real-world needs for persons living with or aging into disability.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Real-World Needs
The lab is equipped with the latest technology, from 3D printers producing customized components to power wheelchairs undergoing re-engineering. These innovations are designed to address a wide range of challenges, from mobility limitations to communication barriers, ensuring that each solution is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals.
A notable feature of the lab is the mock studio apartment, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and office, where researchers can simulate everyday environments. This space allows for testing and refining devices, ensuring they function effectively in real-world scenarios. By replicating the conditions users may face, researchers are better able to create solutions that are practical and impactful.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators
During a recent visit, high school students from Rock Canyon High School had the opportunity to explore the lab and engage with CIDE’s researchers and engineers. The students participated in hands-on demonstrations, experimenting with assistive technologies for visual impairments and adaptive gaming.
This collaboration between students and professionals highlights the importance of fostering interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM) and assistive technology fields among younger generations. By providing opportunities for students to engage with life-changing technologies, CIDE aims to inspire the next wave of innovators dedicated to inclusivity and accessibility.
A Mission of Inclusivity and Impact
The work being done at CIDE goes far beyond technological development—it is about creating solutions that change lives. The Human Factors Testing Lab fosters a culture of collaboration, where industry, researchers, engineers, and community members come together to design with inclusivity in mind. Good design, after all, benefits everyone, and CIDE’s commitment to accessible solutions ensures that diverse abilities are always at the forefront of innovation.
By actively involving students, researchers, and individuals with lived experiences, the center is shaping the future of accessible and assistive technology. The goal of the Product Testing Lab is to improve existing technologies and to create technologies that not only meet the needs of today but also drive the advancements of tomorrow.
