Flex Sensor Usability Study: Improving Home Rehab Through User Insights

Challenge: Joint replacement patients often struggle to complete home rehabilitation exercises without direct clinical support. The Flex Sensor was created to monitor exercise compliance remotely. We delivered a systematic user evaluation of the prototype.

Key Results:

  • Average SUS usability score of 88.5 (Excellent) from 20 participants
  • High feasibility rating (4.6/5) among post‑surgical users
  • Therapists reported strong potential for improving exercise compliance and patient engagement
Accessibility and Usability in Action

Overcoming Accessibility Barriers in High-Stakes IT Certification Simulations

Challenge: Interactive experiences included on computer based assessments are often inaccessible or unusable for individuals who rely on assistive technologies. The lack of accessibility prevents otherwise qualified people from obtaining the certifications required for career advancement.

Key Results:

  • Simulations that work for users of assistive technologies
  • Usability gaps identified and addressed during remediation
  • Mitigated legal risk due to non-compliance with accessibility standards

Switch-Accessible Book Conveyor System for Students with Disabilities

Challenge: Many students at Fletcher Miller School (pre-K to 12) lack the motor skills and/or strength to select their own school library books from the school bookshelf. We enabled switch-control access to a hanging book conveyor system to empower students with increased sense of agency and independence.

Key Results:

  • Customizable system that allows students to press a switch to get the book they want
  • The system will serve ~90 students, and is designed to accommodate various motor impairments and prevent fault states for safety

Beta Testing and Client Assessments for LUCI Technologies

Challenge: To help push forward beta testing for a first-of-a-kind product for power wheelchairs, CIDE clinicians aided the LUCI team to provide expert feedback and training. By identifying potential technology users and optimizing their LUCI setup, our team was able to provide data on optimized setup and rider satisfaction.

Key Results:

  • LUCI was named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Best Inventions of 2020
  • Clinicians shared weekly updates to inform product iterations and developed a rider-satisfaction survey
