Team Derry/Gonyeau Prevails

Tournament win comes on the final shot of the day

September 13, 2019

Derry/GonyeauAfter going 3-up to start the back nine, any premature celebration was cut short as Derry and Gonyeau needed all 9 holes to take the victory from a persistent Adams/Machado duo.

"We pretty much had them right where we wanted them. Turns out it was the ol' rope-a-dope." said a relieved Gonyeau after the match. "I mean, we were 3-up with 4 to play. Things looked good until our opponent decided to turn it on."

And turn it on they did. With series of straight drives and heat-seeking approach shots, Machado and Adams erased their deficit to enter the final hole all-square. Since they won the previous hole, they also owned the tie-break, forcing Derry/Gonyeau to actually win the 9th for victory.

Machado's tee shot on 18 went into the water, and Adams' tee shot sliced far to the right. That opened the door enough for Derry/Gonyeau, and they took advantage with an approach chip that finished 2 feet from the hole. This forced Adams/Machado to sink a 20ft putt to win, a feat that proved to be too difficult on this day.

Clearly, Machado was distracted.

"I'm old school. These kids on their scooters, zig-zagging across the course like that... it disrupts everyone's game. I kept yelling, 'get off my lawn!' but they wouldn't listen."

The same distraction could be said of the losing teams. Karklins was admittedly more focused on riding his scooter than on his next shot.

Not helping matters for team Beel/Howell was the fact that Howell arrived 15 minutes late for the event. His partner, Jeff Beel, was less than pleased.

All in all, it was a fun afternoon for everyone involved. This event concluded the 'major' events for the year. Since it was originally scheduled at Indian Tree GC in Arvada, the league will look to have the 2020 Hack-a-thon held there .
