The Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program "Direct Access to the Muslim World" helps U.S. colleges and universities enrich student, faculty and community understanding of Islamic civilization and today’s Muslim world. The program aims to strengthen knowledge resources for relevant global issues. It offers a unique opportunity for U.S. universities to host specialists from countries with significant Muslim populations for short-term programs of intensive lecturing, public outreach, and consultation.

The Fulbright Visiting Specialists lecture in the social sciences and humanities, both on and off campus. Subjects include political science, international relations, history, Islamic studies, sociology, women’s studies, economics, literature and the arts with a focus on Islamic society or civilization. The program encourages inter-religious dialogue activities. The Visiting Specialist also works with the U.S. host institutions on projects that provide lasting benefits; examples include curriculum consultation, faculty development, and institutional linkage-building.​

The Distinguished Chairs Program is among the most selective of the Fulbright programs. It is comprised of nearly forty distinguished research and lecturing awards at universities throughout Europe, Australia and South America. Fulbright Distinguished Chair recipients have a significant publication and outstanding teaching record.

JOHN MARSHALL DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE - HUNGARY

This prestigious award is given to a senior scholar with an exemplary reputation in teaching and writing that focuses on U.S. political institutions and an understanding of comparative political systems as they relate to the U.S. The scholar is also familiar with political theories that are recognizable to Hungarian students. He or she must be able to adapt instruction to the needs and interests of students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.​​

An American public diplomacy effort, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States to earn a master’s or doctoral degree. More than 1,800 new Foreign Fulbright Fellows enter U.S. academic programs each year. This program offers participants valuable insights into U.S. society and values. It has brought some of the world’s finest minds to U.S. campuses; many foreign Fulbright grantees are early-career professionals who will take leadership roles in their home countries.​​​​

This program promotes the development of cooperative networks between Mexican and U.S. higher education institutions. Applicants must affiliate with a Mexican academic institution, primarily a university, a research institution or an NGO. Applications are accepted in all fields of study, in particular, in public administration or public policy and projects that pertain to Mexican culture, society and politics. The purpose is to deepen the understanding of Mexico in the United States.​

This program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of modern foreign language and related area studies in the U.S. by providing opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad. It funds fellowships through institutions of higher education, enabling faculty to maintain and improve their language skills and knowledge of a different culture and its people.​​

The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad annually. The grantees lecture and conduct research on a wide variety of academic and professional areas, traveling in countries throughout the world.

In 2009-2010, thirty top academics and professionals from the U.S. and abroad collaborated for a year on a topic of global significance, focusing on the theme of “The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center.” The program played a vital role in forging new links among scholars and professionals from around the world who collaborate in seeking solutions for issues that affect humankind.

The New Century Scholars Program combines the traditional Fulbright research exchange experience with a series of three in-person seminar meetings and ongoing virtual communications. Multinational and multidisciplinary participants are under the guidance of the New Century Scholars Distinguished Scholar Leader. The New Century Scholars reconvene at the end of a program year to share the results of their individual research and collaborative engagement. Through this process, they develop recommendations for initiatives that translate their combined results into innovative pathways for making tangible impact on the local, regional or global level.​​

The Fulbright Specialist Program promotes linkages between U.S. academics and professionals and their counterparts at universities abroad. The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals in select disciplines. These Specialists engage in short-term collaborative two-to-six week projects at higher education institutions in more than 100 countries worldwide.

The project activities focus on strengthening the development needs of higher education institutions and do not fund personal research. Eligible activities include teacher training, short-term lecturing, seminar facilitation, and the development of special conferences or workshops. Specialists also collaborate in curriculum planning and institutional and/or faculty development.

U.S. faculty and professionals apply to join a Roster of Specialists for a five year term, followed by a peer review from professionals in the same discipline and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.​​

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The largest U.S. international exchange program of its kind, the program offers students opportunities to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, and teaching activities in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The program was established to increase mutual understanding between the people or the United States and citizens of other nations. Students conduct their studies and research in more than 155 countries.​

The 800 Fulbright Visiting Scholars who come to the United States each year offer a rich resource for campuses and communities throughout America. These visiting international academics and professionals teach, conduct research, do short-term guest lecturing, and help internationalize campuses at very little cost to institutions and organizations.​
